Sign, redact and send a scanned document without uploading it anywhere

Banks, landlords, schools and HR teams all ask for the same thing: "just sign it and send a scan." The quick way people do it, uploading the file to whichever free site comes up first, means a stranger's server now holds your signature, your address and maybe a passport number. Here is a short routine that does the whole job in the browser, with the file never leaving your computer.

1. Put the pages in order first

If the request came as several photos or separate PDFs, combine them before anything else, so you sign and send one tidy file.

2. Sign it

Sign PDF lets you draw or type a signature and drop it on the right line. Two habits worth keeping:

  • Date it next to the signature if the form asks; a missing date is the most common reason forms bounce back.
  • Initial every page only if the document says so. Otherwise don't add marks the other side didn't ask for.

3. Hide what they don't need

An ID copy for a flat viewing does not need your ID number visible. Before attaching a photo of a card or a document with other people on it:

  • Redact image to black out numbers you aren't required to share (write "copy for X, date" across it if you like)
  • Blur faces when a family photo or a school form shows other children
  • Remove photo location: phone photos carry GPS coordinates of where they were taken, which is usually your home

4. Make it fit the attachment limit

Scans from phones are often 15 to 40 MB. Most email providers stop at 20 to 25 MB, and many web upload forms at 5 or 10 MB. Compress PDF usually gets a phone scan small enough while keeping text readable. Open the result and zoom in on the smallest print before you send it.

5. Name the file like a grown-up

"Scan_0042.pdf" gets lost. "2026-11-06 Lease renewal signed - Surname.pdf" doesn't. It costs ten seconds and saves the "can you resend it?" email.

Why on-device matters here

All the tools above are from FixMint, a free collection of 83 browser tools. They run in your browser tab: nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and once the page has loaded it works offline. For signed contracts and ID scans, that is the whole point.
