Can you sell AI-generated coloring books on Amazon KDP? Rules, page sizes and royalty math

Short answer: yes, Amazon KDP accepts coloring books made with AI images, but you must disclose AI-generated content when you publish, you can create only a limited number of new titles per day, and the money only works if your list price clears the printing cost by a healthy margin. Check those three things before you design a single page.

Does Amazon KDP allow AI-generated coloring books?

Yes. Since September 2023, KDP's publishing form asks whether your content (text, images or translations) is AI-generated, and you have to answer honestly. AI-assisted work (you drew it and used a tool to tidy it) doesn't need disclosing; AI-generated images do. Amazon also capped how many new titles an account can create per day at the same time, so "upload 50 books this weekend" plans don't work. Always read KDP's current content guidelines before publishing, because they change.

What page size and resolution should a coloring book use?

Most coloring books use an 8.5 x 11 inch trim. If your art runs to the edge, KDP needs bleed: add 0.125 in to the width and 0.25 in to the height.

Setting Value
Trim size 8.5 x 11 in
Page size with bleed 8.625 x 11.25 in
Pixels at 300 DPI (with bleed) 2588 x 3375 px
Aspect ratio (with bleed) about 0.767 (width / height)
Export PDF, print quality, fonts embedded

AI image tools rarely output that exact ratio. Generate at the closest ratio, then crop or pad. A free aspect ratio calculator gives you the exact pixel size for any ratio so pages don't get stretched.

Print one design per sheet and leave the back of each page blank. Buyers use markers, and ink bleeds through.

How much do you earn per copy?

For paperbacks on Amazon, the royalty is 60% of the list price minus the printing cost. The printing cost depends on page count and marketplace, so get yours from KDP's printing cost calculator.

Worked example (example numbers, use your own): list price $8.99, printing cost from the calculator $3.15.

  • 60% of $8.99 = $5.39
  • $5.39 - $3.15 = $2.24 per copy

Each extra page raises the printing cost, so a 100-page book is not automatically better than a 50-page one. Test two or three price points against your page count before you publish.

What makes an AI coloring book actually sell?

  • A narrow theme and audience. "Cozy cats for adults who like hygge" beats "Animals".
  • Clean line art. Thick closed outlines, no grey shading, no tiny fragments. Clean up every page by eye.
  • A cover that reads as a thumbnail. Most buyers see it at the size of a postage stamp.
  • A few honest interior previews in the listing images.

Where can I learn the full workflow?

The step-by-step version (prompting for line art, cleanup in Canva, KDP setup, keywords and pricing) is in The Canva-to-KDP Zero, a $4.99 ebook by Yunus Emre Vurgun. His free web tools are at apprun.icu.
